Google Acquires Over 50 Patents From Magnolia Broadband

Google has acquired more than 50 patents from New Jersey-based fabless semiconductor company Magnolia Broadband. These patents, says Magnolia, cover “methods for increasing spectrum utilization (network capacity), expanding coverage, improving uplink transmission speeds at the cell edge, and improving device battery life.” The terms of this transaction were not disclosed, but Magnolia’s chairman of the board Yaron Eitan notes that this deal “provides a return to our investors and funding for continued development of Magnolia?s MTD technology.”[...]

Nissan’s Leaf charger will soon power your home for two days

Those in the market for a new car may want to give Nissan’s fully electric-powered vehicle, the Leaf, another look after the company’s latest announcement.
The company said that its Japanese customers will now start receiving Leaf-based EV Power Stations with the capability of powering a home for a couple of days — that’s on top of its ability to keep your car charged for travel of up to 100 miles.
The new EV Power Station can supply 6kWh of energy to a home, which should keep it running for about two days, depending on usage. The new Power Station also features the ability to charge your Leaf vehicle faster, hitting an 80 percent full charge in four hours. That[...]

With new app, Facebook brings social insights to consumer health

Facebook is wading into the health tech space. The social network announced Tuesday that it is partnering with GE to launch a health app called HealthyShare�that lets people add health and fitness goals to their timelines so that friends can help them follow through.
Launched to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics, the app includes a range of fitness and diet challenges, as well as workouts sponsored by Olympians Michael Johnson and Summer Sanders and Olympic hopefuls Kevin Durant and Alex Morgan.
Using the Olympics as a social catalyst, Linda Boff, executive director of global digital marketing of GE, said, ?It?s a platform that helps people get motivated and lean into better health.[...]
